HT fireboard behind a stove: what to check before fitting

Gray high-temperature boards Vitcas HT stacked

The HT board can create a heat-resistant surface, but it does not independently determine the safe distance between the stove and the wall. Before installation, it is necessary to determine the function of the entire cover: finishing, insulating, or structural. Only then can the board, adhesive, and fasteners be selected.

What is known about the HT board?

High-temperature board Vitcas HT is a gypsum-free board. Its use in finishing surfaces exposed to heat is described in the documentation. It should not be equated with any insulation board or with an element intended for the interior of a fireplace.

A masonry wall and a wooden partition require a separate assessment. In the latter, combustible elements may be hidden under the finish. A non-combustible surface does not mean that the stove can be placed closer to the wood.

Information needed before installation

  • Stove model and clearances specified in its manual.
  • Wall materials, including layers not visible from the outside.
  • Required thickness, support, and method of fixing the shield.
  • The need for a ventilated gap and the placement of its inlet and outlet.
  • Final finish: paint, plaster, or tiles.

This data allows you to check the compatibility of the panel, instead of choosing a panel solely based on the temperature given in the catalog.

The substrate affects the choice of adhesive

The panel documentation distinguishes bonding to smooth and uneven substrates. For a smooth surface, it indicates Vitcas BA adhesive, and for a more uneven substrate, it describes the use of HB60 adhesive. You should also check whether the project requires mechanical fasteners or another structural panel.

Before gluing, plan the joints and dry-fit the elements. Do not cover wires or holes that are to remain accessible. Choose the finish according to the side of the panel and the system described in its current manual.

What this guide does not resolve?

There is no single distance or single installation method that fits all stoves. If the appliance manual does not confirm the selected layout behind the wall, present the above information to the installer. The initial start-up should take place only after the required drying of the materials and checking the ventilation clearance.
