A free evening between grill sessions can be a good time to assess the joints, but it is not always enough for their repair and preparation for fire. First, check the size of the gap and the material instructions. The work time should also include stages that are not visible after leveling the surface.
Check the boundaries of the gap
Inspect the cold grill after removing loose residue. Note whether a narrow joint is missing or a wider part of the lining. Check if the neighboring bricks remain stable. A moving element cannot be repaired by simply smearing its edge.
Compare the location with the previous photo. Recurring damage after each repair may result from load, movement, or substrate movement. Identifying the cause reduces the need for continuous application of additional layers.
Choose the material according to the geometry
Outdoor Oven Cement is a dry hydraulic mortar for the described external refractory joints. The instructions provide the range of joint thickness, so first measure the repair location. Do not arbitrarily increase the amount of material to fill every larger hole.
For suitable larger fills, the manufacturer also recommends Heatproof Screed. This is a dense refractory material, not a lightweight insulation. The selection should correspond to the function of the missing piece and the support requirements.
Take into account a usage break
Prepare the substrate according to the instructions, mix the prescribed portion, and protect the fresh work from conditions that could damage it. Do not apply the product to a hot firebox as a temporary fix during grilling.
Allow the required time for setting, drying, and gradually preparing the equipment for use. After it has cooled, inspect the joint and the adjacent elements. If the meeting date comes earlier, postpone using the grill; properly chosen mortar still requires correct application.
